Russell Smallwood

Sports & Exercise Physiotherapist

Olympic-level experience, applied to real-world active people.

Russell Smallwood is an APA Titled Sports Physiotherapist, with over 40 years’ experience helping people stay active, strong, and pain-free on the Sunshine Coast. He has been a consultant physiotherapist to the Queensland Academy of Sport since 2003 and has worked extensively with elite swimming programs across Australia and internationally. Russell was the Lead Physiotherapist for the Australian Swimming Team at the Tokyo and Paris Olympic Games, bringing world-class experience back to everyday athletes and active adults on the Sunshine Coast.

Based in Caloundra, on the Sunshine Coast, Russell is widely recognised for his expertise in shoulder rehabilitation and swimming-related injuries, while also providing comprehensive physiotherapy care for neck, back, hip, knee, and other musculoskeletal pain.

In the clinic, Russell helps swimmers, surfers, functional strength and fitness athletes, and active adults who want to keep training, working, and enjoying life without recurring injuries slowing them down. His approach focuses on identifying the real cause of injury — often strength deficits, muscle imbalances, or movement overload — and rebuilding capacity through targeted rehabilitation, strength and conditioning, and load management. In your appointment you can expect treatment techniques including expert level “hands on” manual therapy and acupuncture to help relieve your pain and restore range of movement.

Whether you’re returning to the pool, maintaining performance as you age, or managing a long-standing shoulder problem, Russell offers clear guidance, practical treatment, and performance-focused care backed by decades of elite sports physiotherapy experience.
