Recover from a MPFL reconstruction/repair

December 11, 2014

Following a Medial Patello Femoral Ligament (MPFL) reconstruction or repair, the most important thing in the 48 hours after surgery is to try to get the swelling to settle down. You should rest and elevate the leg so your knee is above the level of your heart. This will help pain and swelling – don’t get up and about too often on the first day or so.

After three to four days when the bandage is off, you’ll be able to use ice for 20 minutes at a time every few hours.

We recommend using crutches to walk for the first week or so. If you have any questions or worries get in touch with your doctor and/or physio who will clarify any concerns you have about pain and your knee recovery.
